Lifetime Map Updates
Lifetime map updates are map updates a sat nav maker offers for the life of the device. They do not last for ever, and the terms define how long they run.

What it means
Garmin’s manual says Lifetime Maps entitle you to updates when Garmin makes them available, during the useful life of one compatible Garmin product or as long as Garmin receives map data from a third-party supplier, whichever is shorter [1]. Garmin’s nüMaps page says up to four updates a year for the life of your sat nav [2]. Garmin’s licence says a product’s useful life means the period when it has enough memory and other capabilities to use current map data and can operate as intended without major repairs, and that a product is deemed out of service if no updates have been downloaded for 24 months or more. It also says Garmin may decide the useful life has expired if a device cannot be given enough memory [3].
Why it matters when you buy
Read the terms for the exact model. We could only open Garmin’s, so we cannot say how other makers define “lifetime”.
A worked example
Under Garmin’s licence, a device whose last map update was downloaded on 1 March 2027 and which downloads nothing after that is deemed out of service once 24 months have passed, on 1 March 2029.
