A cordless stick vacuum runs from a rechargeable battery, so run time, charge time and battery care matter more than they do on a corded model. Choose one by how long it runs on the mode you will use, how long it takes to charge, how heavy it is, how much dust it holds and whether you can get spare filters. Our research on specific models is listed below.

How to choose
- Run time on the mode you will use. Makers quote “up to” times. Hoover lists run times from 45 to 100 minutes across its cordless range, depending on the model [1]. A UK seller lists the Russell Hobbs RHSV2211 at up to 60 minutes with two speed settings, but does not say which setting gives the 60 [2].
- Charge time. Hoover lists 3.5 to 5 hours across its range [1]. The same seller lists 5 hours for the RHSV2211 [2].
- Weight. You carry it up stairs, so check the figure. The RHSV2211 is listed at 2.8 kg by one seller and 2.85 kg by another [2][3].
- Dust container size. A smaller bin means emptying more often. Hoover lists 0.7 litres for the models on its range page [1], and the RHSV2211 is listed at 0.5 litres [2][3].
- Filters and spare parts. The RHSV2211 listing mentions double filtration [2], but we could not confirm whether replacement filters are sold. Check that spares exist for the exact model before you buy.
- Guarantee. B&Q lists a free 1-year guarantee on the RHSV2211, with a free second year if you register it [2]. Terms differ by seller, so check where you buy.
Battery care
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service gives this advice for lithium-ion batteries at home [4]:
- Use the manufacturer-approved charger and follow its charging times. Replace a damaged or worn charger with an official one.
- Do not charge while you are asleep or away from home. Unplug once the battery is full.
- Charge somewhere safe, not in a hallway or shared space that serves as an escape route, and away from flammable materials.
- Stop using and charging the device if the battery smokes, gets very hot, swells, leaks, hisses, smells unusual or charges slowly or not fully.
- Never put a lithium-ion battery in household waste. Take it to a recycling centre or a manufacturer recycling service.
Questions people ask
Should I buy a cordless or a corded vacuum?
It depends on the size of your home and whether you will keep a battery charged.
The case for cordless: there is no cable to manage, and the models we looked at weigh under 3 kg [2][3].
The case for corded: there is no battery to run down or charge, so no run time limit, and no lithium battery to look after [4].
Drawbacks: a cordless vacuum stops when the battery does, even when the quoted figure is 60 minutes or more, and the quoted figure may apply only to its lowest setting [2]. A corded one keeps you tied to the socket.
Bottom line: cordless suits small and medium homes and quick clean-ups. Corded suits large homes or long sessions.
How long does a cordless vacuum really run?
Makers quote “up to” times, and the time depends on the mode. The Russell Hobbs listing does not say which of its two settings gives the 60 minutes [2]. Hoover’s range runs from 45 to 100 minutes depending on the model [1].
Can I charge it overnight?
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service advises against charging while you are asleep or away, and says to unplug once the battery is full [4]. Follow your vacuum’s instructions as well.
What should I do with a failing battery?
Stop using and charging it if it gets very hot, swells, leaks or smokes. Do not put it in household waste. Take it to a recycling centre or a manufacturer recycling service [4].
Recalls and safety
Cordless vacuums contain lithium batteries and chargers, so check recalls before you buy and if you already own one. Our product safety and recalls page explains how we check.
We searched the official recalls list for “cordless vacuum” on 19 October 2026 and it returned 86 reports. They include a recall on 1 October 2026 of a 4-in-1 handheld cordless vacuum sold via eBay, a December 2023 recall of the DC adaptor supplied with Beldray Revo cordless vacuums and the Salter hand vacuum, and a January 2023 recall of Bissell cordless wet and dry vacuum floor cleaners [5].
