Dash Cam Hardwiring

Hardwiring is connecting a dash cam to the car’s fuse box instead of plugging it into the 12 V socket.

What it means

The RAC says most dash cams plug into the 12 V socket. It says parking mode, or having the camera switch on and off with the engine, needs it to be hardwired to the fuse box, and it recommends leaving the work to a professional [1]. Road Angel says some Halo Pro features need the camera to be hardwired, without saying which [2].

Why it matters when you buy

If you want parking mode, check the camera’s instructions to see whether it needs a hardwire kit and what the kit costs. The RAC says dash cams use little power and should make little difference to a healthy battery, and that a hardwired camera draws minimal power when the car is off and wakes only when it detects an impact [1].
