Ice Scrapers

An ice scraper clears frost and ice from glass with a hard edge, so how you use it matters as much as which one you buy. UK motoring guides agree on the same basics: use de-icer first, keep the wipers off, and clear all the glass before you drive. This page covers technique, what to avoid and the rules. Our research on a specific scraper is listed below.

How to use one

  • Spray de-icer first, then scrape. Arnold Clark says de-icer spray can help melt ice faster, and that you scrape the rest off once it has loosened [3]. The AA says to use a scraper and de-icer on the outside while the inside warms up [1].
  • Warm the glass from inside. The AA says to turn the blower on to the windscreen and use the rear and mirror heaters if fitted [1].
  • Take care at the edges. Rias says to be careful along the edges of the windows and windscreen to avoid damaging the seals [2].
  • Wear gloves. Rias and Arnold Clark both suggest gloves for cold hands [2][3].
  • Use a soft brush for snow. Arnold Clark suggests a soft brush for clearing snow from the car, especially the roof [3]. The AA suggests a soft brush for the front grille [1].

What to avoid

  • Hot or lukewarm water. The AA says not to use it, because temperature changes can crack glass and warm water can refreeze [1]. Rias also warns that boiling water can crack glass [2].
  • Wipers on a frozen screen. The AA, Rias and Arnold Clark all say to check the wipers are off before you start the car, because frozen wipers can be damaged or torn [1][2][3].
  • Using the wipers to clear ice. Rias says not to use them for this, since they could be damaged if frozen in place [2].
  • Clearing a small gap. The AA warns that clearing only a small viewing gap could lead to police action for driving dangerously [1].

Choosing a scraper

We could not find an opened UK source that compares scraper materials or blade designs, so we do not recommend a type here. What the guides do say is that the scraper is only one part of the job [1][2][3]. When you compare scrapers, check these points against the maker’s own page:

  • Whether the edge is made to be used on glass, and how the maker says to look after it.
  • Whether it comes with a brush or glove, if you want one.
  • The warranty, and the seller’s returns terms.

The rules

These points come from the Highway Code and the AA. They are guidance, not legal advice.

  • Before you set off. Highway Code rule 229 says you must be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from all your windows. It also says lights must be clean and number plates clearly visible, mirrors clear and windows demisted thoroughly, and that you should remove snow that might fall into the path of other road users [4].
  • Fine for obscured vision. The AA says driving with obscured vision can bring a £100 fine and 3 points on your licence [1]. Check the current penalty before relying on it.
  • Do not leave the car running unattended. The AA says to stay with the car while the engine runs, because thieves target unattended cars [1].

Questions people ask

Can an ice scraper scratch my windscreen?

None of the guides we opened say a scraper will or will not scratch glass, so we cannot say. Rias advises care at the edges to avoid damaging seals [2]. Check the maker’s instructions for the scraper you buy.

Do I still need de-icer if I have a scraper?

The AA and Arnold Clark both describe using de-icer and a scraper together [1][3]. Arnold Clark says to spray first, then scrape [3].

Can I use a credit card instead?

Rias says a spatula or credit card can work if you have no scraper, but to avoid damaging the card’s magnetic strip [2]. Rias does not say it is as good as a scraper.

Do I have to clear snow off the roof?

Highway Code rule 229 says to remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other road users [4]. Arnold Clark says snow left on the roof can slide down the windscreen when you brake [3].

Recalls and safety

Check the maker’s instructions before you use a scraper. Our product safety and recalls page explains how we check.

We searched the official recalls list for “ice scraper” on 19 October 2026. It returned 19 results, and none were ice scraper products. The first eight were ice crushers, ice screws, an ice maker and unrelated items [5]. Search the official recalls list for your brand. Recalls checked 19 October 2026.
